Hop into the Long Weekend

Running out of ideas to entertain the troops with a long weekend on the horizon? Look no further. Here’s our list of some exciting family activities for you.

Take your kids and your canine to the National Service Dogs Easter Egg Hunt for Dogs on Good Friday. We like that it’s a great family event that raises money for a good cause. Plastic eggs are filled with doggy treats and there are plenty of chances to win prizes on the day. The hunt kicks off at 10 am at the Absolute Baseball Academy.

The Telus Spark Centre has a new Solar Observing exhibit over the weekend. Inspire your junior astronaut-in-training and safely gaze at sun spots and solar storms through special telescopes set up on the outdoor terrace. Experts from the Calgary Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada will be on hand to answer all the ‘why’ questions (that parents can’t). This event is free with admission, and runs for three days starting on April 6 (from noon till 3 pm).

Some of us just can’t get enough of the snow and spring is definitely the best time to have fun on the slopes without the wind chill. Calgary Olympic Park has daylong ski or board camps on April 9. Out in the mountains, the ski hills are also having their spring parties, with Nakiska putting on an outdoor BBQ including a DJ, children’s magicians and balloon animals, plus helmet decorating. Creative types that love cardboard, tape and glue can get busy for the Cardboard Box Downhill Derby on April 7 at Lake Louise. You can build your own sled and race against the clock, with prizes being awarded to the three fastest entrants and to the most original creations. There is no entry fee, but the end result will be priceless.

There are plenty of Easter-themed activities and crafts to keep you and your kids happy at the ever popular eggstravaganza at the Calgary Zoo. You’ll enjoy face painting, cookie decorating, an Easter egg spin-to-win, egg and spoon races and pin the tail on the bunny—just to mention a few. Be sure to have the camera ready and arrive early, as it gets crowded in the afternoon. All activities are included with the regular zoo admission price.

With pet events, mountains and stars (all with chocolate), there’s no excuse to say you’re bored this weekend. \\\Tested by Fiona H., Calgary
