Ottawa: The Savvy Guide to March

We’re not sure what St. Patrick would say about sharing March with National Nutrition Month, but we’ve got some tips on how to make the most out of March.
DO
Promote healthy eating in your home and school for Nutrition Month
Why? Because it’s our kids’ lives that are at stake. Share the information with friends and teachers and try out some new recipes at home.

GO
To the annual Barnyard Break at the Canadian Museum of Agriculture March 3 to 18
Why? Because if milking cows, cuddling rabbits, chatting with the chickens, making maple taffy and butter is fun for Old MacDonald, imagine how much fun the kids will have. E-I-E-I-O.

GET
Prepared for your March Break
Why? Because you don’t want March Break to be your new ‘March Breakdown’. If you’re staying in town, make a plan. If you’re travelling, check out these must-have items (and we’ve got more to come).

PLAY
Your favourite music and dance to it with your kids
Why? It can’t be all kids’ music all the time. Start influencing their musical tastes—it will help with future family car trips.

HELP
Take part in the Doggy Yoga Fundraiser at PranaShanti Yoga Centre on March 3
Why? Kids can support the SPCA by learning fun animal yoga poses, creating special animal crafts and more. You can also donate old blankets, dog food, food bowls and towels—a great way to clean out your closet for spring.

READ
Tim O’Toole and the Wee Folk by Gerald McDermott
Why? Because it’s great to be Irish—even just for a day.

SURF
www.wemuv.com
Why? Because it’s educational and promotes fun physical activity (and we love it when the two collide).

APP IT
Ayoudo
Why? Because when you need to deal with one of life’s little emergencies (or something bigger), Ayoudo can connect you to trusted people in your community who can help.

GREEN IT
On March 17, channel your inner Kermit—wear green, eat green, make green crafts—get the picture?
Why? Because we thought it would be more fun to include this tip than a greener ‘green’ one this month. Just remember to think about the environment while you’re being green.

MAKE IT
Rainbow Juice Jigglers
Why? While we can’t always promise there’s a pot of gold at the end of every rainbow, we can at least enjoy the rainbow itself, and these adorable jigglers make for a great treat on St. Patrick’s Day.

DEAL IT
Shop at harlow’s perch and save 15% with code savvy15 until March 17
Why? These gorgeous, whimsical products—from tutus to hats, tiaras, PJ pants and more—are not only adorable, but affordable and make for lovely kids’ gifts. An added bonus: there’s free shipping for any order over $60.
