Ottawa: The Savvy Guide to June

The Savvy Guide to Ottawa in June - SavvyMom

June is typically always a busy month for moms, but the kind of busy that fills your heart and home with light, love, and laughter. This is usually the time that summer sports are in full swing with practices and games galore. June used to be packed full of school fun fairs, final exams, graduations, work events, charity picnics, and more. We’re getting there!

As our world continues to open up, you may be interested in exploring Ottawa and the surrounding areas a little bit more 🙂

And this month we’ll still take a day to celebrate the great dads in our lives as we look forward to the summer ahead.

Here’s the Savvy Guide to June in Ottawa:

Things to Do in Ottawa in June - SavvyMom

GO

It’s time to head out to explore Ottawa and the surrounding area!
Why? It’s June, we need to support businesses and events that have somehow survived the pandemic, and we need to get out of the house!! Here’s some great events and activities for families in Ottawa in June.

BOOK

If you haven’t already, book those summer day camps!
Why? It’s technically our third pandemic summer, but most summer day camps in Ottawa are back up and running.

DO

Make sure all summer systems are set to go
Why? Sunscreen doesn’t apply itself and summer gear doesn’t automatically line itself up at the front door either. Make getting out the door easy all summer long by organizing a system that works for your family. Label your water bottles, stock up on sunscreen, and keep a big basket by the door of ball caps and sun hats that fit every size.

GET

These awesome waterproof, bluetooth outdoor speakers
Why? We’re still spending more time at home than ever before, and music has become such a huge part of making that more bearable. We’re tired of dragging our portable speakers inside and out and now, why would we? These waterproof bluetooth speakers look just like rocks! No cords are needed and they last up to 30 hours per charge with built-in rechargeable batteries. They wirelessly stream music from up to 33 feet away.

READ

Drop the Worry Ball: How to Parent in the Age of Entitlement by Dr. Alex Russell and Tim Falconer
Why? Having helped many families with challenging kids and kid challenges through his counselling practice, Toronto-based psychologist and hockey dad Dr. Alex Russell has now captured the essence of his wise advice in print. If you want to retire from being the manager of your child’s life and become a true source of support instead, this book shares how.

PLAY

Spikeball
Why? Depending on how competitive your kids (or you!) are, Spikeball is not nearly as vicious as it sounds. It’s a fun, active game for kids and adults that can be played anywhere. A taut hula hoop-sized net sits at ankle level between a pair of two player teams. Smack the ball down on the net so it bounces up at your opponents. They need three hits between them to control the ball and bounce it back. When they miss, you score! The first team to 21 points wins.

SURF

ImaginationLibrary.ca
Why? Did you know Queen Dolly’s literacy initiative has been in Canada since 2006? Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Canada is a free book gifting program devoted to inspiring a love of reading in the hearts of children everywhere. Each month, enrolled children receive a high quality, age appropriate book in the mail, free of charge. Children receive books from birth to age five.

MAKE

Frozen Snacks
Why? After the year we’ve had we all deserve all of the frozen treats. But the waistband in your shorts might appreciate that not all frozen treats need to be ice cream! Give these ideas a try for a refreshing and yummy twist.

LOVE

June is Pride Month
Why? Because Love is Love and we want our children to grow up empowered to be themselves and to accept and acknowledge diversity in every form. We share some lovely kids books for Pride month as well as Family-Friendly Ways to Celebrate Pride with Kids.

HELP

Volunteer Canada
As we begin to emerge from the pandemic, many families are taking stock of what’s important and want to give back to their communities. There are many opportunities to volunteer that are accommodating to a family’s schedule and you can volunteer on one single day over a holiday, during a festival, or summer vacation. Volunteer Canada provides tools and resources for families looking to start volunteering together.

THANK

Start thinking about those teacher gifts and thank you cards.
Why? Because yet another bizarre and brutal school year is almost behind us and our kids’ teachers have done their best to teach our kids and keep them safe AND keep their own families running as well. You can’t beat a gift you can eat and there are wonderful local gift options as well.
