Where to Take the Kids to Ride a Train in Calgary
There's just something about trains, isn't there? Why not take your favourite kiddo to see their favourite thing on four wheels? You probably already feel like you live in the Wild West, so make it official and climb aboard to ride the rails.

Aspen Crossing Railway
Located just south of Calgary in Aspen Crossing, there's a few ways to enjoy the 3-4 hour round-trip train rides at Aspen Crossing Railway. Our favourites are the Circus Train ride, which includes face painting and on-board circus entertainment, the Meals in the Field option which offers an outdoor lunch and a grain elevator tour, and the Train of Terror: a special Halloween ride with haunted railway cars, 'disturbing' entertainment and a Halloween party at the end. (Hint: this might not be the best option for really young ones!) Also, beginning November 24 and running on select dates until Christmas Eve, kids can ride the Polar Express, complete with carols, hot chocolate, and yes, the gift of a silver bell. Cue the feels.

Alberta Prairie Railway Excursions
Alberta Prairie Railway Excursions not only gives you and the kids the chance to travel across the prairies on a steam train, but the six-hour round trip includes a meal, entertainment and a stop halfway through. Oh, and find out about the robbery. (And have some change ready.)

Iron Horse Park
Iron Horse Park in Airdrie is a 'must see' if you've got locomotive lovers in your house. Hop on a miniature train and follow the 1.6 km track as it chugs through the small park, which includes hillsides, valleys, ponds, bridges and tunnels. There's a little history there as well—as one of the friendly engineers will tell you, Iron Horse Park's railway was designed to represent the Canadian Pacific Railway track from Calgary to the coast of BC. Good to know: The park is open every Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm until Thanksgiving, as well as having an annual 'Halloween Run' and a 'Frostbite Run' on Family Day in February, complete with hot chocolate.

Heritage Park
Heritage Park is too big to cover in one day for most children. Consider purchasing an annual pass (paid for in three visits) and head straight for what's sure to be their favourite part of the park: the authentic steam train. You'll experience the Park's natural beauty as the train charges over a mile long track. Good to know: The steam train is available from Victoria Day Weekend to Labour Day, then select dates until Thanksgiving.
