We’ve been honoured with another distinction!
A few weeks ago, we found out that SavvyMom Media had ranked #14 on the 10th annual PROFIT HOT 50 ranking—which lists the ‘hottest’ and fastest growing companies in Canada. Well, as if that’s not exciting enough, the people at PROFIT invited us to a weekend of networking and training (what they call ‘Growth Camp’), which took place last weekend in Niagara-on-the-Lake. There Sarah and I met the other CEO’s of the other top 50 companies, listened to inspiring talks and participated in some group workshops. It was a busy weekend but it was very helpful and very inspiring, as we learned the stories of all the other businesses in attendance.
Here is a video that kickstarted the final keynote speech made by Cameron Herold, former COO of 1-800 Got Junk. It captures the spirit of what everyone was celebrating over the weekend—entrepreneurship—and how entrepreneurs can change the world.
If you are a small business owner yourself, a mom entrepreneur or if you know one, you’ll appreciate this.
The PROFIT HOT 50 is the definitive ranking of Canada’s Emerging Growth Companies. Published in the October issue of PROFIT magazine and online at PROFITguide.com, the PROFIT HOT 50 ranks young firms by two-year revenue growth.

Yes, yes, yes—the answer is yes, we are running the SavvyMom “Mom Entrepreneur of the Year Award” again this year, and thank you to all of those interested parties who have flooded us with inquiries. The 2010 program launches at the end of May and as always, we’ll be welcoming all Canadian mom entrepreneurs to nominate themselves and jump into the running. Watch www.momentrepreneuraward.ca for all the details.
We’ll have some exciting changes this year as well—I can’t share them quite just yet—but check this space for more soon. We salute Canada’s mom entrepreneurs and we look forward to celebrating their success with all of you.

If you’ve ever developed a website, you’ll know that they are a lot like babies. You think working on them is a tough, never-ending task and you just can’t wait for the site to go live so the development stage is over (kind of like being pregnant). But as moms know, being pregnant is often a lot easier than being a mom of a newborn, with all the care and feeding requirements that you are suddenly solely responsible for. And the funny thing is the same thing happens with websites.
Once you ‘give birth’ to the site and unveil it to the world, suddenly you start getting users, people other than you, who are interacting with your site. And then they have questions or send in forms…all of which mean you get busy responding to all that. And just when you thought you couldn’t be busier than you were in the development (pregnancy) stage, you’re wrong!
And this class situation has been my lot this past week. For 10 straight days I was heads-down, iPod on in my office, up late and back up again early, as we cranked through the final stage of development of the site for the 2010 SavvyMom Mom Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Yesterday, we officially launched the program, and I thought I could take a bit of a break…but I was wrong. We’ve been so busy with inquiries and reviewing nominations and making final tweaks to the site, that I realize there won’t be a break for a little while longer.
But it’s all good news because it means lots of mom entrepreneurs out there are hearing about the contest and nominating themselves, and from the level of the new comments being submitted, it looks like there are lots and lots of voters out there, too.
So what are you waiting for? Head over to www.momentrepreneuraward.com and nominate yourself, or vote for a superstar mom entrepreneur.
As for me, I am hoping for a work-free weekend this weekend. But while you’re on the site, do let me know if you see anything that needs to be fixed.

What do a mobile petting zoo, a natural café with a family centre and an online fine home furnishings store all have in common?
Can’t figure it out? They are all amazing businesses run by Canadian mom entrepreneurs, recently nominated for the 2010 SavvyMom Mom Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
We’re almost all the way through this year’s award (generously presented by PayPal), and once again we’re amazed by the variety and number of Canadian mom-run businesses that are out there. And if you read through the profiles, you will be amazed by the inspirational stories of moms’ great ideas for businesses, how they are helping through their extensive charitable initiatives and how they are finding that elusive work-life balance we all hope for.
We’ve got just over two weeks left to go in the contest—I hope you will take a moment to browse the site at www.momentrepreneuraward.com and cast a vote for your favourite mom entrepreneurs.

I’m sure you have all heard of the devastating fire that claimed the homes of over 7000 residents in Slave Lake, Alberta last month. Thousands of families were displaced by this horrible natural disaster but like with all tragedies, there is usually a humanitarian story to be heard. This time, its mom entrepreneurs who are stepping in to help.
Together with the Edmonton Emergency Relief Services, Baby Gourmet, a small business that specializes in frozen (and tasty) baby food has sent 4000 units of its product to Slave Lake. That’s about 8500 nutritious meals for babies in the hardest hit areas.
Jennifer Broe, Co-Founder and President of Baby Gourmet Foods spearheaded this initiative because her ‘business has grown based on the support of Albertans, when we heard about the Slave Lake disaster; we saw an opportunity to give back. Partnering with Edmonton Emergency Relief Services has made this donation possible”. Broe says, “As a mother, I know how hard it can be to make life work on a day to day basis, let alone after your home and all of your possessions have been destroyed. We wanted to step in and help provide some healthy and delicious meals for babies, one less thing those moms would have to think about—at least for the moment.” We think this mom has her priorities straight.
Another mom entrepreneur who is pitching in is Traci Costa, owner of clothing line and online store Peekaboo Beans. They’re holding an online auction offering vintage and rare items from their website (by vintage we don’t mean ‘gently used’, we mean previous collections). What better way to pitch in than to shop and pick up a few items you might have had on your list anyway?
