And the Winner Is…

The 2009 SavvyMom Mom Entrepreneur of the Year award program was as exciting as always this year, but as with any good competition, there can only be one winner.
Today we’re thrilled to announce that Shirley Broback of Laughing Belly Productions, the producer of the Vancouver Island Baby Show is this year’s winner. (In fact the most recent one took place last weekend so Shirley had a lot going on last week!) Shirley joins our growing list of Canada’s top mom entrepreneurs which includes the team from Mabel’s Labels and Martha Scully of Canadiansitter.ca.
Shirley clearly had a ton of local supporters in the media and the general public who all came out to cast their vote for her. Her shows provide great opportunities for other mom entrepreneurs to showcase their wares to the public and she’s a great supporter of the mom entrepreneur movement in BC so we think that might have also had something to do with her success in garnering votes. Congratulations, Shirley!
Interestingly, and probably well against the odds, this is our second winner in as many years to hail from Vancouver Island. Do you think there’s something in the warm, damp air out there that grows successful mom entrepreneurs?
Cast Your Votes
We’re counting down the days until the end of voting in our third annual SavvyMom Mom Entrepreneur of the Year Award… and there are 19 to be precise!
It’s always a very exciting time of the year for us here at SavvyHQ when we await the results of the voting and find out who will be joining past national winners Mabel’s Labels and CanadianSitter as Canada’s top mom entrepreneurs. And while we’ve got more questions than answers until the votes have been cast (and counted and audited), there are a few things we know for sure based on our experience with the winners to date:
- No matter what type of company wins, they will offer a high quality product or service that was spawned out of a great idea a mom had for making something better (even if that thing is her own work-life balance).
- No matter who the founders of the company are, they will be incredible women.
But right now, all we can do here at SavvyHQ is wait and see, because we’re not allowed to vote as sponsors of the award program. But you’ve got 19 more days to show your support for mom entrepreneurs by visiting the nominee gallery on www.momentrepreneuraward.com and casting your vote for your favourites! You can vote for as many companies as you want—just only once each.
And if you’re a business that’s been nominated, it’s time to kick up that vote drive a notch—experience has shown that the last few weeks are when all the votes tend to come in so keep seeking that support from your network. They want you to win and all they have to do is visit your nominee profile on the site to help.

Comments
I just read an article in Costco Connection which featured this lovely lady who just won the Mom Entrepreneurs award.
I am a mother of two boys 9 & 10 and I work full time for one of Canada’s Largest Commuincations Company. I love My Job but I would like to look into starting my own business from home to allow me more time to spend with my boys and also bring in a little more income. I just need to come up with an idea that will be different from others to allow me to succeed and the funding if I ever do find something different from the rest. Hopefully I can figure out something from some ideas from this site and others.
