Mad About Munsch

My favourite books as a small child were The Little Engine That Could and The Paper Bag Princess. Or maybe I think they were my faves because I loved reading them to my own kids so much. Whatever the answer, my heart skips a beat when I think of those books. Like right now.

I know you have some favourite books too and I want to know what they are. If you’ll tell us your favourite kids’ book below, we’ll enter you into a draw to win the most recent collection of Robert Munsch stories—Mad About Munsch—put together by Scholastic Canada. The draw closes on January 21.

Books by Robert Munsch are a staple of every child’s book collection and a favourite among parents and kids. They’re fun, frivolous and downright silly. And they just keep getting better.

So tell us your favourites—is it Munsch, Seuss, Dahl or Carle? We would love to know. You might even see your name on SavvyMom one day!

My daughters favourite book (this week) is “Don’t Eat The Babysitter” by Nick Ward.  It is a funny story about a fish that babysits a shark and all the fun that goes along with it.  WE have read it a dozen times already this week and my daughter is still asking for it.

Munsch is huge in our house, probably with ‘we share everything’ coming in at the top currently as my 5 yr old is in kindergarten. my 3 yr old has rediscovered goodnight moon and grumpy bird which makes her giggle everytime.

With two girls in the house, Make-up Mess by Munsch is by far our favorite. We’ve read it so many times we can recite by heart - almost!

One of my favorite books to read to my children is LITTLE PEA by Amy Rosenthal.  It is about a pea that has to eat all his junk food (instead of vegetables).  It is really a cute book.

When my eldest son graduated from high school I read Love You Forever as a toast and there was not a dry eye in the house. When my daughter was about to receive a transfusion of life saving bone marrow for leukemia I read Love You Forever and we and the nurse cried. This past Christmas I read Love you forever to my 2 year old grandson and smiled through my tears as I sang our family’s version of the Love You Forever song and held him close! Good times, bad times, bedtimes this book has been my favourite!

My kids love Robert Munsch books, what’s tough is to chose one book.
We love reading Makeup Mess, I think I have the book memorized because there isn’t a night that I haven’t read it to my little girls. We not only love the story but the illustrations are pretty funny, specially the little story’s that’s always going on in the background.

My daughter loves Mortimer! My husband really gets into it when he reads that book and before long my grown husband and 2 year old daughter are yelling “MORTIMER!” together. Such a fun book!

So many books to choose from but I think my all time favourite to read with the kids is Dr. Seuss’s “Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?”.  There is a regular size version and a mini book version as well.  Reading it with different voices is a huge hit with the kids and they eventually remember the entire book.

I love Munsch, who doesn’t?!?!  But right now my son is addicted to “Who Stole The Cookie From The Cookie Jar?”  I have no idea who wrote it, but it’s pretty cute.

We love Mortimer because I like to use my big voice with that one and also Walter the Farting Dog because who doesn’t love fart jokes.?

Mortimer by Robert Munsch has my son making music all day singing clang, clang, ratlle, bing-bang!  Another favourite is “Wocket in my Pocket” - read over and over and over!

Our favourites right now are the “If you give a Mouse a Cookie”, “If you give a Pig a Pancake” and “If you give a Moose a Muffin” books.  We both love how the stories build as each act has a consequence and it keeps going and going.  The illustrations are wonderful.
