With March Break and St. Patrick’s Day colliding this week, I decided to put together a few fun ideas to keep your kids green—both in the ecological and celebratory sense—while they’re home from school this week.
Make a Rainbow Connection – Rainbows have inspired everything in the past year, and food is no exception. Let your kids loose in the kitchen for a little fun this week by assembling a colourful fruit platter, a rainbow cake, or some rainbow juice jigglers.
How Does Your Garden Grow? – With sunny skies ahead (hopefully). Now would be a great time to sow some seeds for a few starter plants. Carrots would be timely, and if you want to grow tomatoes from a seed, now is when you want to start them.
Make It with Maple – Maple syrup season is officially upon us. Plan an outing to your local sugar bush, or stage the 1st Annual Pancake Olympics for your family. Events can include pancake stacking competitions, pancake Frisbee games, and pancake-on-a-spoon relay races. For older kids, a pancake-eating contest is also a delicious challenge to consider.
It’s for the Birds – I heard a few chirps outside last week, making me think this would be a great time to make a few homemade feeders for our flighty friends. Canadian Living has a great recipe for seedy pine cones that are family-friendly. If nut allergies are a concern, swap the peanut butter for sunflower seed butter instead.
Have an Irish Feast – Stage an authentic, Irish-inspired meal sometime this week, complete with Irish Stew, potatoes, and soda bread. Round out the meal with green-hued beverages; beer for the adults and shamrock shakes for the kids.
How are you celebrating all things ‘green’ this March Break?

I made these little pudding pots for my kids this past weekend, and they couldn’t have been more thrilled with the outcome. A simple stove-top chocolate pudding, lightly infused with a little peppermint extract, makes for a perfectly easy dessert that even the littlest of kids can help prepare.
Place the pudding in a small glass vessel, cover with a sprinkling of chocolate cookie crumbs, then insert a sprig of mint to create a little spring garden. The green garnish makes this a completely acceptable St. Patrick’s Day snack, and slightly different than the heavily tinted green foods typically on offer that day.
