
Buying food locally is one way to be green (and healthier) in the kitchen. The next step is to choose cookware that is safe for your family and the environment. This Earth Day, cook ‘green’ with eco-friendly cookware from GreenPan.

We are slowly switching from plastic to glass lunch containers and for leftovers as well. It is expensive but we are doing it gradually when containers come on sale.
I often use natural substances such as vinegar, baking soda and lemon to clean in the kitchen.
Ooh, these pans look amazing! My best green kitchen tip is for cleaning your drains. Dump about 1/2 a cup of baking soda into your drain, following by a cup of vinegar and let it foam for a few minutes. Then, pour some boiling water in (ideally left over from cooking). Your drain will be spic and span without the name brand toxic cleanser.
This lovely green pan, along with the green bin, will make an excellent spring start in my kitchen.

I save my not-so-pretty veggie ends (ex. celery) in a med to large container in fridge so I can add to it through the week at the end of the week, it all gets put in the crock pot or stock pot to make stock; veggie, chicken, what have you. I am not wasting these bits so it is great on the grocery bill as well.
I re-use milk bags for sandwich bags. They’re the perfect size and once washed out and rinsed, just let them stand to dry or use your dish towel. You can close them with twist ties, elastics, or those potato chip clips.
My favourite green kitchen tip is to use baking soda to clean my oven instead of using those highly toxic oven cleaners. Baking soda is environmentally friendly and can be used to clean almost anything! Simply make a paste of baking soda and water to spread around the inside of your oven, let it sit for a few hours, and then wipe it away. Your oven will look brand new again!
I try to cut up all of the vegetables I will need for the week at once. That means I’m not using multiple cutting boards and knives throughout the week which saves on water for washing them.
I like to use microfibre materials-mops, and norwex cloths with argent silver as a sanitizer. They work and they are eco-chic!
Well, my favourite green tip would have to be recycling with my green bin and blue and grey bin. The less waste we have the better it is for the future for our children and everyone else in this world. If anyone would just separate all their waste and paper and plastic products instead of throwing everything in the trash, we wouldn’t have so much garbage and so much litter in our streets. It only takes one small step on everybodies part to make this world a bit greener!!
Green tip: compost your food scraps and then use the compost in your vegetable garden.
I am always conscious of conserving water…I never let the water run any more than I need…hope everyone would think this way! :D
Using reusable shopping bags for grocery, or any other forms of shopping. You’ll never need to use a plastic bag again.
I guess our favourite is using vinegar and water to clean and disinfect items such as counter tops and to clean windows.
My green kitchen tip: buy in bulk! I take jars or re-usable bags with me to my local “bulk store” and they will weigh them and subtract the weight from your bulk items. That way you save money by buying in bulk, packaging by buying from bins and plastic bags by bringing in your own re-usable jars!!
I use only vinegar in the kitchen for cleaning. Cleaning vegetables and fruits mixed with water. I use it to wipe down the cupboards and wash the kitchen floor. I use it in the dishwasher instead of dishwashing detergent - dishes come out sparking clean. It is cheap, only one product to store and buy and friendly to the environment.
Vermicomposting. A great way to divert kitchen waste, make some great potting soil and get the kids interested in worms.
I reuse those hangers from kids clothes that has the pant pinch clips attached to hold me recipe book off the counter. I place the book in the pinch clips and then hang the book from the cabinet handle above the area where I am cooking. I reuse the hanger and save my book from getting dirty. I have handed a few of these to friends and show them how to use it and they loved it!
Favourite green tip is keeping a handy box of baking soda under the sink for cleaning the sink and kitchen surfaces! It works so well and is totally safe!
