Sprout Right Cookbook

We’ve been admirers of Lianne Phillipson-Webb around here for a long time. If you don’t know her, she’s the mom entrepreneur and registered nutritionist behind Sprout Right, which offers a wide range of nutrition services for ‘tummies to toddlers’. She’s got a huge following of moms in Toronto who have consulted her for prenatal nutrition, and then moved on to making organic baby food under her supervision. And now, for moms everywhere, she’s published a great resource book entitled Sprout Right—Nutrition from Tummy to Toddler (Penguin, $26, May 2010).

I was lucky enough to get a chance to read an advance copy and flattered to be asked for a testimonial. As I am quoted on the back cover, this book is “a fantastic resource about nutrition for expecting and new moms—the only book you’ll need in your kitchen.” It’s full of the latest nutritional research for pregnancy, babies and children; tips and tricks for healthy eating, and over 75 healthy and yummy food recipes for babies and beyond.

My kids are older now, so no more baby food for me, but what I love the most in the book is all the recipes for healthy snacks, such as Divine Cookies (sugar-free but you would never know), gluten-free Sinless Chocolate Almond Brownies, Go Faster Granola Bars and our family fave, Organic Rice Crisp Surprise Squares, a much healthier version of the old bake-sale classic. Enjoy the recipe—I am sure your kids will.

Organic Rice Crisp Surprise Squares

You’ll Need

  • ½ cup brown rice syrup
  • 2 tbsp blackstrap molasses
  • ⅛ cup sunflower seed butter
  • ¼ cup almond butter (for a nut-free version, substitute the same amount of sunflower butter in addition to the above amount)
  • ⅛ cup tahini
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • ½ box (140 g) Barbara’s Organic Rice Crisps
  • ⅛ cup sunflower seeds
  • ⅛ cup pumpkin seeds

Prep and Cook

  1. Heat rice syrup, molasses, almond butter, tahini, sunflower seed butter and vanilla in a saucepan over medium-low heat until well combined and almost runny. Remove from heat.
  2. Add cereal, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds and quickly stir well to coat. Press into 2 8-inch (2L) square trays and let cool. Makes about 32 to 64 squares, depending on how small you cut them.

I’d love to win a copy of this book. My little girl is just getting started on solids and loving it!

I heard this author on CBC radio on Friday and she was so insightful!  As a mother of twins I have double the worries when it comes to eating.  I seem to question everything…it is so difficult to know what to do at times. Feeding our kids is something that no mom wants to screw up!  As a first time mom myself, this book would be a welcomed “rescue” to all of our eating questions…for two!!

This sounds like a great book. Now that my son is getting older, I’m finding it harder and harder to come up with new meal ideas for him. I think this book would be a big help!!

I would love this book - feeding 4 kids under the age of 9 is always a challenge especially when I want to be healthy and as organic as possible.

Wow- I can’t wait to try the Rice Crisp Surprise Squares- and any gluten recipe is a winner in my book as my husband needs to eat gluten-free. It’s very difficult to find recipes that are gluten free, but still kid-friendly!

Would absolutely love to have a copy of the book! I might just go buy one myself, and if I win, I can pass it on to other expecting/new moms I know!!

Since my son, who is 6 now developed peanut allergies at 16 months I have to look for new and interesting ways to make make meals he can and will eat.  Now that I have a 4 month old daughter I am already thinking about having healthy home made foods for her and with this hoping to change the overall eating habits of our family.  This book sounds like a great start to my family changing their eating habits.

I’m so glad to hear that Lianne has written a book to share her incredible knowledge.  I’ve been a fan since she was teaching how to make pureed foods at Whole Foods.  As a working mom, it’s so hard to keep up to date on the latest in nutrition.  This will be a treat to read!

This sounds like a wonderful book that my daughter could make great use of. She has a nine month old and is expectoing another child this summer. She is making her own baby food right now and this book would certainly help expand her knowledge.

I would absolutely love a copy of this book!  I’m telling all my friends who are new moms about this book.  I am currently making my son’s baby food and I always love to find new recipe ideas to make for my son, recipes that are healthy and yummy for my little one.

Now that we are just on solids, Liam has become very very picky! I’d love to see what sort of help this book could over to up the vegetable and protein in my toddlers diet.

Since my daughter has been on solids I’m constantly trying to think of new meal ideas that are healthy and nutritious. I make all her food from scratch but I haven’t found any great cookbooks that have more than 1 or 2 good recipes… hopefully that will change with this cookbook!

What a fantastic idea for a book. I am expecting my first child in the fall and would love to have this book to help me along.

Anything to help me keep our boys (4 years and 16 months) on the right eating track would be great.  I agree with Susannah - being a working mom makes it tough to keep up to date on all the latest nutrition recommendations. This book sounds like a great resource.

My son did great with purees but became really picky when it came time to introduce textures and finger food. I’m always looking for ways to get him to eat well but it can be so discouraging at times. I would love to win this book and try some healthier recipes rather than resort to KD and chicken nuggets…

I would love to win this book!!!  My daughter is 4.5 months so we will be starting solids very soon.  I intend to make all my daughters food but find a lot of books on feeding solids out of date, out of country or just full of boring recipes.  It will be great to have a canadian book that will give me some ideas, and hopefully show me the ropes since this is my first child.  I’m excited but suuuuper nervous about starting solids.

This sounds like a really useful book.  My son is a picky eater but I want him to eat healthy foods.  The recipes sound like they would appeal to him but also provide nutrition.

Congrats to Lianne for her huge effort in putting together a book! I would definitely LOVE a copy and support her incredible work in educating parents to know about natural nutrition for families with tried and true recipes. My 4 year old daughter enjoyed the benefits of Lianne’s recipes and I am just getting into it with my 10 month old. Many thanks.

Would LOVE to win this book. Expecting my first child and planning to make my own baby food.

    Thanks
