Remember your school pictures? Mom did her best to comb unruly hair and straighten crumpled collars for your turn with the Jostens photographer in the gym/ studio. Those beauties likely still grace the sticky pages of family albums.

We agree that September is the perfect time of year to say cheese with memories of a relaxing summer still front of mind and vestiges of that lakeside tan still on our skin. School photos are inescapable but there are more flattering options to slip in to this year’s Christmas card.

Perry Thompson has been behind the camera for over twenty years and operates both kidsphoto and Perry Thompson Photography (PTP) in Calgary. While they are both excellent choices for your family photos, they offer different levels of product and service.

Kidsphoto’s display flashes brilliant smiles and pops studio colors to food fair patrons at Market Mall. What appears to be a department store studio is nothing of the sort. Inside you’ll find photographers skilled at putting smiles on your families’ faces usually without faux backgrounds or loads of props. Sessions last a mere 30 minutes and cost only $49 including one touched up 8 x 10 (or buy three for $99). We had particularly good success with photographer Monica Beckett. Keep in mind the background is white and bright coordinating colors look particularly flattering.

Prints are competitively priced at $38 per sheet (one 8 x 10, two 5 x 7s). Kidsphoto also prints postcards suitable for holiday cards. They offer a range of options from buying the digital images to printing out sheets so there is a package to suit your needs and budget.

Perry Thompson Photography is more of a boutique photographer that goes the extra mile to create custom images that suit your lifestyle with extras such as on-location shoots and pre-shoot at home consultations. Photo sessions generally last an hour or more and start at $150 for one of PTP’s associate photographers or $250 for Thompson himself. While studio shots are always an option, Thompson prefers to take advantage of the natural beauty outdoors to enhance your family’s own natural beauty.

Prints start at $35 for a touched up 5 x 7. PTP can also create thank you cards, albums and coffee table books with your images and they will provide custom framing too.

Whether you go high or low, supplement those annual school pictures with images your family will be proud to display anywhere including the fridge.
