We teach our children to ride bikes, do the front crawl and print the alphabet. We show them good manners, how to bake cookies and clean up their toys. Our busy kids take music lessons, dance lessons and gymnastics.
But when it comes to teaching valuable lessons like how to develop positive self-esteem or how to make friends or even how to handle anger responsibly, many of us are at a loss. How do we teach those skills (particularly if they have never been taught to us)?
Consider adding Child Safe Canada’s list of self-development courses to your child’s roster. While you may be familiar with Child Safe Canada’s Red Cross Babysitter Program or Home Alone Safety courses, they also offer a full range of course offerings designed to help children aged 4–8 develop self confidence and self-esteem while refining social interaction.
Founder and mom entrepreneur Tracey Warren launched Child Safe Canada after her daughter suffered a serious head injury accident. Warren says that many people designated to help her daughter throughout her lengthy recovery did not have adequate training. Warren vowed to help more people become properly trained in First-aid. Child Safe Canada’s First-aid and Home Alone courses are now highly regarded in Calgary Board of Education Schools.
All courses are designed to teach children injury prevention, including social injury resulting from a lack of social skills or friendship building knowledge. Instructors are professional social workers, educators, paramedics and off-duty police officers. While there will likely be a few special needs children enrolled, classes are designed for your average school-aged youngster.
Classes are primarily taught at Child Safe Canada’s training center in Lakeview (where Mise en Place and Baby Gourmet are located close by for multi-tasking moms). Courses are offered in the evenings or weekends and range from one to six sessions.
Online registration is available currently for programs offered in the next 12 months. Many programs fill up quickly and wait lists are also available online. Fall programming starts at the end of September and a six-week program comes in just under $100. Expect some parent involvement so the entire family can share new skills.
September registration is next on the family to-do calendar. And it definitely can’t hurt to help your kids develop their friendship and self-esteem building skills alongside academics and athletics this school year.
