Wine Not

Wine Tasting Events
Wine tasting wonder

I am red, white or pink all over. I have great body and carry a beautiful bouquet. I can be bubbly and I make the perfect dinner companion. What am I?

Wine, of course. Both agri-product and art form, wine is a complex concoction that deserves a little time and attention before breezing into our dinner parties, girls’ nights and gift bags.

We’re not looking to become vin-experts but we do think it’s a good idea to know what to buy. A little guidance on how much to spend and what wine goes with what food is always good to have in your back pocket.

Karla Watts is a mom, an entrepreneur and purveyor of fine wines. She recently launched Ruby Red Vino, a company dedicated to the art of wine drinking. According to Watts, the best wine is simply wine that you like and the best palate-discerning technique: taste, taste and taste some more (now that’s homework we can live with).

In a twist on the standard wine tasting event, Ruby Red Vino hosts all women and wine evenings monthly ($97) at the Watts’ home. Expect to taste six to eight wines, including four classical grape varieties as well as two regional wines (from special places), at this introductory event. Snacks are catered by Fresh Kitchen and Janice Beaton Fine Cheese.

Ruby Red Vino also hosts couples’ events (quarterly) with an eye on creating community as much as crafting connoisseurs.

We are impressed with Watts’ knowledge (she taught us new vocab in the first five minutes) and her gracious and professional hosting, as well as her abundant passion for wine.

Next to your beloved, a good wine is the best date, but just like a date, you’ll enjoy it more when you know what you like about it first.
