OK, so that’s not quite how the Queen lyrics went, but what is this thing called blog anyway?  And why should moms care about them?

A blog, or web log, is an online personal journal regularly updated with reflections, and comments.  They are virtual diaries with one major difference from the pink padlocked one you kept hidden away from your mother in grade 6.  Blogs reveal the writer’s musings for all the world (wide web) to read. 

Thousands of moms are blogging today and this is a good thing, because while chronicling what’s going on in their lives, and sharing the funny, the trying, the exhausting, the wonderful, the messy …  sides of motherhood, they are also developing online communities and virtual support groups.  These networks can help us realize that we are not alone in this sometimes challenging undertaking of being a mom.
 
The main reason moms blog is to share: documenting the daily details of their children’s lives for friends and family to read, to the more cathartic desire to get their sometimes conflicted mom thoughts out there, learn what others are thinking and reassure themselves that they are not crazy (and that if they are, they are not alone in their craziness). 

For a compendium of other mom blogs to get you started, try Dot Moms.  Most bloggers also list their personal favourites on their own blog, which can be another good way of finding one you like.  We’ve seen hockey mom blogs, mom of teenagers blogs, knitting mom blogs, single mom blogs … you’ll be able to find one out there for you. 

So, now you’re “cool, relax[ed] and hip” (as the aforementioned song goes) to blogging.  Give it a try.  At the very least you can find out what all the fuss is about.
