Al Fresco: Not One of Daddy’s Friends

Westboro Beach

Next time the weather’s fine and you’re thinking of going out for pizza, consider taking a trip down to Westboro Beach. Bet you didn’t know that Moe Attalah of Moe’s World Famous Newport Restaurant runs a licensed patio right there on the Ottawa River. You won’t believe this, but the patio serves the same amazing pizza his restaurant is so famous for: cheesy, hearty, and oh-so-delicious. Did we mention it was cheesy?

And, although the pizza is the big draw, why not make a family outing of it?

  1. Call the City of Ottawa Beach Info line at (613) 580-6744, ext.13219. The automated message will indicate if water quality is acceptable for swimming at each of the four supervised beaches.
  2. Bring bathing suits, towels, sunscreen and plenty of sand toys. Lifeguards are on duty from noon to 7 pm every day.

  1. Go a bit early so the kids can play and you can relax and enjoy the view.
  2. Order your food 15 minutes before your kids realize they’re hungry. The menu is pretty good for a beachside joint. You’ll find the usual hot dogs and hamburgers (beef and veggie), a few salads, souvlaki and hummus. But we firmly stand by the pepperoni pizza. It easily serves four. Follow up your dinner with a chocolate or vanilla soft serve and they’ll think you’re the best mom in the world…or at least you will anyway.
  3. Scope out the patio. Smoking is allowed here, so choose your location wisely. If all else fails you can eat on the beach.
  4. Eat, then marvel at the fact that there is no mess in your kitchen to go home to.
  5. Enjoy catching minnows with the kids or taking them rock hunting along the shoreline.

Dinner (and cheap entertainment!) in seven easy steps—those are numbers we like.

Good To Know: Bring Cash—it’s a cash only establishment and we’re pretty sure your kids are not that good at doing dishes—yet!
