So few summer weekends, so many fabulous festivals—how to choose? Back by popular demand, here is our annual round-up of the best Ottawa summer festivals for families.
For starter’s there’s the Canada Day Festival. Don’t let the name fool you—it’s not just a one-day event. Most of the fun takes place at Andrew Haydon Park in the west end. Here’s our savvy scoop on local Canada Day fun.
Next up, we love the International Busker Festival. This is a short one but it’s action-packed. With more than 40 performances daily, virtually all of them free (not counting the coins your kids will insist on contributing to the hat so don’t forget to bring some), this festival doesn’t need a special family day or kids’ activity area—the whole thing is designed to entertain all ages. Just don’t sit too close to the fire jugglers, and don’t miss Bike Boy!
We’re also heading to The Musical Breeze Bike Parade, a joint event organized by the Rideau Canal Festival and the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival. This is a unique musical cycling event. Bring the whole family out on their bicycles (or tuck them safely into your bike trailer). Leave from Lansdowne Park, then bike along the canal towards City Hall while encountering mini-concerts and invitations to participate in music-making by ringing your bell or singing. Get festive by letting your kids decorate their bikes for the event. Good to Know: Advance registration required!
Mark your calendar and make some summer memories!
Don’t forget to check our new GoSavvy Event Finder for events all across Canada, all year long.
The Ottawa Folk Festival at Britannia Park, is our pick for parents who haven’t given up entirely on getting out to live music events. Describing itself as “family-friendly, community-focused, culturally diverse and committed to sustainability and eco-friendly initiatives”, this festival has something for everyone, and you can’t beat the location for kids who need room to run. There are special children’s and family performances as well as artisans, fair-trade vendors and great food.
Finish your summer off on the right note with the Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival. Featuring more than 150 balloons in different sizes and shapes—including international offerings in the shape of a giant ladybug, fish, bumblebee and beagle—this festival also boasts an amusement park, crafts market, bazaar and family stage.
