Consignment store shopping is the ultimate challenge. It’s all about hope. And luck. And it’s also environmentally friendly. If the shopping gods are smiling, not only will you find that special something but you’ll also pay a lot less than retail.
Not sure where to begin? Consider the following:
The secret shopping destination of many Ottawa SavvyMoms is HUSH ReSale Clothing (but we’re exposing the secret). Inventory favours the kind of mom who has a flair for style, knows how to have fun, and is smart too. Sound like anyone you know?
Happily, HUSH is flush with warm-weather wear right now: springy shirts, flowy skirts, and even maternity wear. But don’t get your short shorts out just yet. Co-owner Alison Hughes suggests we wait until the hot weather really hits. And we agree. Who needs to be blinded by our paleness?
Boomerang Kids specializes in baby-related equipment, toys, and consignment clothing and they also carry a selection of new toys as well. If you’re up for a little digging there are some amazing deals to be found here. It pays (as it so often does) to be a regular. Approximately 100 pieces of clothing are put out on the sales floor every day. Unsold items are pulled after two months.
Good To Know: Boomerang also hosts (free!) Strollercising at both their Richmond Road and Bank Street locations. Check out their website for dates and times.
The focus at Clothes Encounters of a Second Time is on ladies designer goods (did we really pass over that $85 Burberry wrap skirt?) but if you’re feeling a pang of guilt and want something for the man in your life, you might be able to find him something here too so check the basement level.
Don’t forget, consignment is a two way street. For those of us who like to clean out our closets this time of year it is a great way to recycle. Check out each store’s website for information about selling your goods.
Save the planet and save money? Now that’s a challenge we’re definitely up for.
