Colourful Fall Hikes
Add some colour to your weekend activities with the kids. Here’s how.

It’s showtime! But instead of popcorn and 3D glasses, we’re enjoying a different kind of outdoor spectacle at the moment—the fall leaves. In red and gold and green and brown, they are bedazzling. The best way to enjoy this show is to take your family on a hike.

We’ve got a lot of great ideas for family hikes in our region. They’re all good places to see autumn right up close.

If you’re up for the hills, go to the Gatineau Hills! Pink Lake is a great destination, but be warned: the Parkway can get really busy during peak periods. Check the NCC website for maps of trails that are a good fit for your family before you head out.

The Waterfall Trail at the Mackenzie King Estate was apparently one of our former Prime Minister’s favourite strolls, and it’s worth a visit just to see the cool ruins. The Queen Elizabeth Drive, and Colonel By Drive, along the Rideau Canal, are great places for viewing the colour, too (and you don’t even need to get out of your car to do it).

Rockcliffe Park (off the Rockcliffe Parkway) and Hog’s Back Falls are also great places to visit. Don’t forget your camera! And if you’re planning to drive a little farther out (say, Merrickville or Perth), you might want to check out the Ontario Parks’ Fall Colour Report, a handy map that shows when and where the colours are hitting their peak.

Now go catch those leaves before they’re gone! Tested by Andrea T., Ottawa
