Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper.
Mom’s right—breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But moms also know that it’s sometimes hard to get our families to eat something—anything—that will help get them off to a great start.
Today we’re sharing three of our fave local breakfast finds so you can create a power-packed breakfast everyone will love.
Feelin’ All Granola
Siren Bakery is a boutique bakery that makes wickedly good granola. It’s high fibre, low sugar, and made entirely out of good stuff. We’re torn between the Cranberry/Almond and Maple Pecan varieties (honestly, we fought over it). In fact, both are so good you can eat them right out of the package. Our kids really love it in a breakfast parfait (layered fresh fruit, Greek yogurt and granola served in pretty glasses). You’ll find Siren’s granola available in a number of stores across Ottawa, including Farm Boy and Herb & Spice.
The Art-is-in
Ottawa’s favourite bakery now has its own retail location. The Art-is-in Bakery is located in a very unassuming spot in the City Centre (off Scott Road). Don’t let the loading docks throw you off. Look for the sign and make sure you go, because it’s too delightful to miss. The bakery setting might be industrial, but the food isn’t. We go for the über-buttery croissants, melt-in-your-mouth pastries, and savoury breads of all kinds. Grab a latte while you’re doing your breakfast run, because they’re fabulous too.
Good to Know: This is also the place to go for picnic sandwiches. The chicken tandoori sandwich is divine.
Here Piggy Piggy
Looking for the total breakfast experience with locally produced food? Piggy Market is a wee store tucked away in a corner of Westboro, and the place to go for the entire breakfast experience. You can pick up sausages, eggs, and even milk for your coffee (which they get from a local supplier) and jars of honey. The sausages are a wonder: flavourful 100% pork with no filler. Pair them with a couple of (local) eggs for a very happy tummy. In fact, you could even make Piggy Market your only stop, because you can pick up a package of Siren’s granola and an Art-is-in loaf there too.
Now you’re ready to start your day.
