Greening Your Cleaning

The Cleaning Crew
The Cleaning Crew

The newly crawling baby makes his way across the kitchen floor with determination, investigating new territory while his busy mom juggles dinner and the demands of two older siblings. He reaches the cupboard underneath the sink, opens the door and finds all kinds of colorful containers begging to be touched, shaken, sniffed, poured and otherwise experienced. Before anyone notices, he’s tasting the Ajax, and then—

Okay, wake up—it’s just a bad dream. This hasn’t really happened to you after all. But if this is the stuff your nightmares are made of, you may be excited to discover The Cleaning Crew, an Ottawa cleaning service that uses only non-toxic, environmentally friendly cleaning products.

Founded in 2007 by Ottawa mom Courtney Bizeau, The Cleaning Crew relies solely on safe products from companies like Nature’s Clean and Shaklee. A self-described neat freak, Courtney launched her cleaning service after it occurred to her that her infant daughter Violet, then six months old, was crawling across freshly washed floors that were likely still coated in chemicals.

Her first step was to eliminate toxic cleaners from her own house. She then set out to create a cleaning company that used only natural, bio-degradable, non-toxic products—to show clients that “green” products are not just safe, but can also be very effective.

Courtney and her team do all the usual jobs you would expect of a cleaning service, from dusting and vacuuming to scrubbing bathrooms and appliances. Special tasks can include cleaning baseboards, walls and appliances. Prices can vary according to a number of factors, such as the size of your home, frequency of cleaning, number of children and whether or not you have pets. For a ballpark idea, a three-bedroom semi-detached house with a finished basement, two children and a dog might cost about $100.

Courtney is friendly, organized, prompt and thorough (she really is a clean freak). And she brings a whole new meaning to the term green clean.

After all, it’s tough to put a value on cleanliness when your kids are strict followers of the “three second rule”.
