Who doesn’t like pizza? Some say it’s the cheese, some say it’s the crust, but we think it’s all about the topping customization. You can be as plain or as adventurous as you want—it’s your choice (and that can make dinner out with the whole family a lot easier).
An informal Twitter poll suggests that many of us moms are pretty loyal to our pizza places (just what we thought) and here are the places they highlighted as being the best in the city.
When it comes to traditional takeout pizza, Ottawans are quick to cast their ballots for Lorenzo’s and Gabriel Pizza. (In fact, Gabriel’s Hawaiian Cookout with a side of homemade garlic sauce is what we order when we’re not making our own.)
For many others, deciding who’s really best often comes down to a faceoff between Colonnade and Newport. Even Mayor Jim Watson got in on the Twitter debate and proclaimed his loyalty to Newport.
The first runner up in the thin-crust category goes to Forno Antico, which leans towards more traditional pizza toppings, but we have to cast our own vote for Tennessy Willems, the new kid on the block in Hintonburg. Tennessy’s is a little more upscale than the usual kind of pizza joint, but it makes for a great night out and is a popular, kid-friendly destination for families in the neighborhood. (Take heed: reservations are recommended and there’s no kids’ menu. But that’s ok with us.) This is the home of cracker-thin crust, baked to a light and crispy perfection in a wood-burning oven. The Margherita pizza hits the mark (simply dressed with smoky, fire-roasted tomato sauce, fiore di latte mozzarella and basil) but we’re also salivating over the Bianco (pear, walnuts, smoked prosciutto, mozzarella and gorgonzola) which appeals to the foodie in us. They make a fabulous Caesar salad too. Order some local Beau’s beer to round out your dinner. You won’t regret it.
Saving your pennies? Pizza is the perfect dinner to make at home. If you’re looking for an easy (and pretty!) meal to serve, check out our EatSavvy recipe for Asparagus and Prosciutto Pizza.
Now that we know where we’re getting the pizza tonight, only one question remains: who gets to eat the leftovers for breakfast? Tested by Andrea T., Ottawa
