Getting a hot and healthy dinner on the table every night can be a challenge at the best of times. That’s why we’re glad that Sean Patrick Murphy, Chef and Proprietor of Scratch Kitchen, is on the scene, ready to help us when we need it most.
Scratch Kitchen redefines fast food, not just by cooking it up right but by making it so easy. Browse the menu, pick your faves, check the delivery zones and dates, punch in your credit card number and poof…kitchen-related stress will virtually disappear.
The way we see it, Sean is giving us the gift of time. After all, few of us have the time to shop, prep and babysit a beef bourguignon while it simmers for half the day.
All the meals from Scratch Kitchen are prepared in a commercial-grade kitchen in Stittsville, and are frozen in simple heat-and-serve containers.
It’s convenient, cost-effective, and healthy. The foods are made with care and attention. The ingredients are pronounceable and easy to recognize (they read like a grocery list) and no chemical additives are in any of the dishes. Sean takes care to source good quality ingredients, just like he’d serve his own family.
Sean (whose young sons are his ‘Chief Tasters’) encourages parents to let their kids try new foods whenever possible, but we know what kids are like, so they also have a menu all of their own. Top picks for younger palettes include gourmet mac and cheese (secret ingredients include imported cheeses and roasted butternut squash) and pasta in spinach and cheese sauce.
The grown-ups among us are drawn to comfort foods we can’t easily make at home (especially with little people tugging at our pant legs) like butter chicken, Thai chicken and vegetable green curry. The beef bourguignon is also a popular dish.
The ‘stock-up’ selections make great gifts for those who might need a helping hand or a break from kitchen duty, or perhaps for ailing aunts and uncles or any sleep-deprived new moms you know. For us, it’s a great alternative to choosing the drive-through route after soccer or swimming lessons (or both).
Finally, a healthy dinner can be as simple as grabbing something out of the freezer. Now only if we had a bigger freezer.
