Meals Made Easy

Nicely Nourished Meal Calendar
Healthy Meal

“Chicken nuggets?” your beloved answers—rather cautiously—when you ask what he’s planning to cook as you step out the door for a meeting.

The kids shout with glee and plead for fries on the side. Guilt settles in deeper. Sigh.

Help is here in the form of a new calendar published by Nicely Nourished, a new business launched by Marie Anzai and Stephanie O’Manique, two Ottawa nutritionists who are savvy moms to six children between them.

The 2008 Nicely Nourished Recipe Calendar delivers what all busy families need: healthy, tasty weekly menus—five complete meals for each week with recipes at the back for every suggested meal—with coordinated, tear-away grocery lists. Who needs a personal chef?

Our mouths were watering when we sampled the five meals suggested for January 10 through 14: chicken and sweet potato stew, quesadillas and avocado slices, maple pork tenderloin with brown rice and green beans, red pepper frittata and cranberry salad and sweet chili chicken skewers with rice salad and steamed carrots.

Turn to the back of the calendar and you’ll find the shopping list for the week on a convenient perforated sheet. It’s handily divided into two sections: pantry ingredients (so you can cross off what you already have) and fresh ingredients. Just rip it out and go shopping.

For $30, you’ll find more than 100 recipes, and Nicely Nourished is ‘peppered’ with interesting tips on healthy eating. No meal repeats more than twice a month, and weekly menus are deliberately designed for balanced nutrition. (Of course, for those families coping with allergies, or vegetarian requirements, you’ll need to make a number of substitutions each week.)

So save the chicken nuggets for real emergencies and have fun mixing it up a bit in the kitchen.
