Movie Magic

One of our happiest childhood memories is going to the drive-in with our parents, clad in our footed-pjs while watching Star Wars in the back of the wood-paneled station wagon and falling asleep on the drive home. It seemed so epic at the time.

If you’re looking to recreate this experience, take a road trip to the Port Elmsley Drive-In Theatre located between Perth and Smiths Falls.

It’s a very easy and fun family outing, the kind of experience you won’t forget. Here are some things to keep in mind.

Movies start at dusk. If you arrive a bit early (and we suggest you do!) follow the signs to nearby Beveridges Lock to stretch your legs and do a bit of boat-watching before you head in.

Bring cash. The good news is that going to the drive-in is easy on the wallet. Admission for children age five and under is free—for kids age 6–12, it’s only $2. Just remember that Port Elmsley does not accept debit or credit, so bring cash!

Bring window cleaner. Once you’re parked (position your front tires on top of the slope to ensure a better view), give the front window a good wipe before the movie starts. It will be littered with bug corpses from your drive from Ottawa.

Plan your food. Let the kids play in the 1969-era park (complete with metal slide and swings) while Dad checks out the concession stand. There is dinner-type food available (i.e. hot dogs), but many families pack their own dinners. Or consider combining your visit with a trip to Perth (as we did) and grab a bite before you get to the movie.

Arm yourself against invaders. Don’t let mosquitoes detract from your movie-watching enjoyment. Bring something to cover up the windows (we saw some very creative use of netting and other camping gear) and/or bring bug spray or citronella candles or coils. If you’re bothered by mosquitoes, no amount of buttery popcorn will cheer you up.

The drive-in is perfect for kids of all ages—even babies. Parents with infants can easily catch a movie while the babies snooze in their car seats. (And as long as your windows are rolled up, no one will be able to hear any fussing.) You can even set up a few lawn chairs and watch the film under the starry sky.
