Ottawa: The Savvy Guide to June

Is the June bug a pesky small beetle that comes out in June or is it that overwhelming feeling you get when you want to drop everything and enjoy the outdoors as much as possible? We think the latter (of course), and we have that affliction already. Here’s a guide to making the most of June and managing your June bug.

DO
Clean your BBQ
Why? Because there can be lots of greasy build up on (and under) your grill that’s just plain dirty and research suggests that charred food particles may contain cancer-causing agents (and we don’t like to take chances).

GO
To Summer Mazes Opening Day at Saunders Farm Park on Saturday, June 6
Why? To enjoy a fun-filled day of mazes, the Watering Hole Splash Pad, unique play structures, and farm fresh food!

PLAY
Monkey in the Middle with Dad on Father’s Day. Use whatever size ball is appropriate for the age of your children, stand ten feet away and throw, catch and throw back and forth. Include a third person in the middle as the ‘monkey’ who tries to intercept and catch the ball. If the ‘monkey’ does catch the ball, the person who threw it is now in the middle.
Why? Because dads like to play games too (not just watch them on TV); they just need to be reminded of how fun they are sometimes.

SURF
www.farmersmarketonline.ca
Why? Because it is Canada’s first online farmer’s market—connecting online shoppers across Canada with amazing specialty foods and artisanal products.

READ
I Love Dirt!: 52 Activities to Help You and Your Kids Discover the Wonders of Nature by Jennifer Ward
Why? Because it’s time to get outside and get dirty, and this is your quintessential guide on how-to.

GREEN IT
Try out a PC G.R.E.E.N™ Rain Barrel this summer
Why? Because they help lessen the strain on municipal water sources and when you collect rainwater during a storm, you’re also helping to reduce the runoff that washes pollutants into storm drains. Reuse it on your plants—it’s better for them than cold, chlorinated tap water.

HELP
Go to the “Tune Into June” Dance and Silent Auction for the Parent Resource Centre on Friday, June 5
Why? So you can help Ottawa families in need while having fun with friends and family. Tickets are $25. Call (613) 565-2467 ext. 100 for tickets and info.

June bugs or not, we love this month!
