Ottawa: The Savvy Guide to May

If April brings with it the promise of spring, then May’s popularity must come from its ability to deliver. A promise is a promise, but May is the real deal.

Here’s how to make sure you make the most of this cherished month. (And make sure to check out our new suggestion for a good ‘app for that’ each month.)

DO
Plant some herbs in a pot somewhere outside and close to your kitchen (we like basil, mint, rosemary and dill).
Why? Because fresh herbs make any meal seem more gourmet (and it’s cheaper than buying them).

GO
To your local rec centre and try something new.
Why? May is Physical Activity Month, and the City of Ottawa is giving residents the opportunity to try out a variety of programs for free. It’s also part of the Every Day in May Challenge.

GET
Something nice (and shiny) for yourself, your mom or your MIL for Mother’s Day with customized bangles, baubles and beads.
Why? Because you can’t leave an important job like this to anyone else, and these mom entrepreneurs know all about good gift-giving!

PLAY
Man Hunt. It’s like tag, but more fun and is best played with more than four people. One person is the hunter and counts out loud until everyone is hidden. When the hunter finds the hiders, they become hunters as well, until the last person is found. You can also play with two teams and one team hunts for the other (this version is more fun with a lot of people).
Why? It’s a great game to play outside with the whole family. You can even gather a few families on your street to join in.

READ
The Mischievous Mom at the Art Gallery by Erica Ehm and Rebecca Eckler.
Why? Because it’s a fun read for moms and kids, by two very mischievous moms we know.

APP IT
Tribute Movies
Why? Because it makes searching for movie showtimes and theatres—wherever you are—so much easier and so much more fun.

SURF
www.yogatailor.com
Why? Because their custom online yoga videos are perfect for busy moms who want to do yoga at home.

GREEN IT
Stay away from chemi-cleaners for the big spring clean this year. Make your own natural cleaners for the house and the kids’ toys.
Why? Because it’s time for spring cleaning and there is no better time for greening.

DEAL IT
Look for great spring and summer looks for the kids at Please Mum by using code SAVVYMOMPM for an exclusive SavvyMom offer. Get 15% off on orders over $60 or more at www.pleasemum.com until May 31.
Why? Because affordable style for your kids can go a long way.

May is bringing flowers. Don’t miss them.
