It’s hard to imagine that something could make kids any happier than the last day of school, but there is at least one possibility—a block party. The kids will be thrilled to scarf down hot dogs and run, bike or scooter up and down the car-free street until the sun goes down. Meanwhile, you can relax and catch up with your neighbours. Here’s your savvy guide to pulling it off:
A word about sponsors: you never know when a local shop owner or business person may be interested in supporting your event in exchange for publicity. Just $250 is enough to pay for a magic show, cotton candy machine or inflatable bouncer, and in exchange all you may have to do is let the contributor erect a sandwich board or banner nearby.
There are several places in or near Ottawa that rent inflatables for street parties. Circus Delights is an Ottawa-based company that rents inflatable structures and activities, including a moon bounce, giant slide and dunk tank. Chez Lili Party Rentals offers slides, bouncers and various games and obstacle courses. Airbounce Amusements offers a massive variety of structures and activities. Their closest branch is in Montreal, but they deliver to Ottawa (for a fee).
If it sounds like a lot to organize—well, it is. But as the saying goes, many hands make light work. Harness your neighbours’ energy and get planning. For kids, this is the stuff that memories are made of!
