Playing Around (and Around)

Best Ottawa Playgrounds

For a little kid, visiting a new playground is the adult equivalent of a trip to Bora Bora: it’s exciting, sandy, and there’s much to be discovered. But fortunately a playground is a much easier and cheaper kind of adventure, isn’t it?

Just in time for summer, here are a few of our favourite playgrounds we think might be worth the drive, if they’re not in your backyard.

There’s a lot to see at Andrew Hayden Park. It’s one big lovely view. First of all, it’s right on the river. There are meandering pathways, boats on the water, and the requisite amount of wildlife…but don’t worry, it doesn’t get much wilder than geese and groundhogs. The play structure with water features is a big attraction here as well and particularly welcome on a hot day.

Good to know: Bring a towel and change of clothes for the kids, and waterproof foot attire for mom. There are charcoal BBQs here too so spend the day and bring a picnic. (Carling Avenue at Holly Acres Road)

An informal survey resulted in Brewer Park receiving two (albeit very grimy!) thumbs up. Who knew there was an oasis right next to Bronson Avenue? This place is kid heaven, with plenty of grassy open spaces and playgrounds for children of all ages.

We also love the easy-access facilities. The washrooms are equipped with (hot and cold!) running water as well as water fountains. We’re glad to leave the Nalgene at home for once.

Good to know: Dog walking is allowed on the south side of the park near the river. It’s also a great place to do a little exploring and bird watching.

After much fundraising and a very long wait, the new “big kid” playground at Kiwanis Westboro Park opened at the very tail end of last summer. It features the very popular infinity climber.

If your brood is suffering from low energy, emergency coffee/bagels/treats can be purchased from a little snack bar on the second floor of Dovercourt.

Good to know: Wednesdays are “Play in the Park” days. Every Wednesday, Dovercourt staff provide supervision for kids from 3:30 – 5:30 pm. There’s no fee or registration, just show up for the fun.

We’ve got a couple of honorable mentions too….

We know the playground at Rideau Hall, the Governor General’s residence, isn’t the main feature of this amazing place, but it is much enjoyed by the smaller set. Browse around the extensive gardens too and take the time to wander among the trees. Many have been planted by visiting royalty and other foreign dignitaries. (1 Sussex Drive)

South Nepean Park is fun for all ages. The water park is a summer must-do and the skateboard park is fab for older siblings. (Longfields Dr. in Barrhaven)

So take a trip to a far away playground and save your money for Bora Bora until later (like when you go without the kids).
