So Mush Fun

Dogsledding at Montebello
A furry Canadian winter activity

When we think about our home and native land some of the things that spring to mind are poutine, maple syrup, ice skating, and…dogsledding?

It’s the only thing on the list we bet you haven’t tried yet.

Not only is dogsledding a unique part of our national history, it is the quintessential Canadian winter activity. Besides, can you really call yourself a patriot if you haven’t been pulled around by a pack of dogs?

At The Fairmont Le Château Montebello (near Parc Oméga) in Quebec, you can enjoy a unique dog sledding experience whether you are a guest of the hotel or not. It’s very family-friendly and a thrilling (Canadian!) activity for people of all ages.

The drivers will divide you into groups of two: one adult for each child. As you prepare to embark, there will be a lot of yipping and howling coming from the team (they’re as excited as you are) but don’t pet the dogs. They’re working animals, not pets.

You will be directed to sit on the sled and wedge a kid between your outstretched legs. Then you’ll be wrapped up in a fleecy blanket hot-dog style before you take off. This will keep out some of the wind as you and your pack race through the forest, but you’d be well advised to hike up that scarf and cover your face (we regretted not bringing our sunglasses). The driver will be on the back end, steering and braking when necessary. Hold on!

We were expecting to hear a lot of “Mush! Mush!” during our 20–25 minute journey, but seeing as though we were in ‘la belle province’, we were tickled that our dogs responded to shouts of “Allez! Allez!”.

For $30 per adult and $15 per child, we considered it money well spent for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

After your excursion, retire to Montebello’s main lodge and defrost on one of the cozy couches and chairs near the massive six-sided stone fireplace. Order up a Winter Dream (hot chocolate, espresso, whipped cream and chocolate shavings in a tall mug) and some chocolat chaud for the younger ones.

Dogsledding, followed by some quiet time in front of the fire while our mittens dry?

It’s so Canadian, eh?
