Child plays with box for the rest of the holiday.

Sound familiar?

Stephanie Kessler (mom of two) was inspired by such a scene in her house and Karton Kreations and her product “Box of a House” was born.

It’s as simple a concept as concepts can be, really. A box of recycled cardboard (all folded neatly) arrives at your door. Our product testers were able to open and assemble into a house in less than two minutes flat (no pun intended, and yes, we actually timed it). Prices range between $45-50 depending on your colour choice (white cardboard is more than brown).

The fun part comes with decorating the inside and the outside. The box is easy to draw on with crayons, paints or markers—and with a little imagination, a fort, a house, a castle or even a barn emerges. In our case, it was transformed into a recording studio. (Go figure, seven year-old boys.)

This simple, back-to-basics house is perfect for crawlers all the way to school-aged kids and fosters imaginative play for everyone. Some might even learn to keep the house tidy or use the house for a place to put special items during clean-up time. Moms like it because it is safe for the kids and safe for the environment.

We don’t always need all the bells and whistles (or that digi-voice on the toys that haunts us in our sleep).

Sometimes you have to go back to the box in order to think outside it.
