Ponchos have had their fashion ups and downs the last few years, to be sure. (Remember the one Martha’s friend in jail knit for her to wear on her release day?)
But we don’t think they’ve ever been out of style for the five and under set for one very important reason—they remove a few wriggling limbs from the getting-dressed equation and that equals time saved and less get-dressed-stress for mom and dad.
Named after different ice cream flavours (we love the Pumpkin Pie and the Pistachio White Chocolate), and created by savvy mom entrepreneur Karen Stark of Vancouver, the cozy ponchos are made from fleece and accented with adorable cotton prints which are used for the lining, trim and front pocket (perfect for keeping treasures in). Karen’s goal is to have ‘101 flavours’ of ponchos and we can’t wait to try them all.
So why Po Po? Inspired by her daughter Lily and her husband’s grandmother after whom Lily is named (Po Po is the Chinese name for grandmother), Karen also wisely thought that for kids just learning to speak, the too difficult phrase “Mom, I want to wear my poncho” could be replaced by simply “mama my po po”.
Snap closures at the neckline accommodate all sizes of heads (remember that size of head percentile stuff from labour and delivery?) and the ingenious snaps on the side create temporary sleeves when closed. The ponchos ($40 and a very reasonable $5 for shipping) come in three different sizes fitting children from age 1 to 5, and are machine washable in cold water.
Now that spring is really, really here, it’s time for a little “ponch” of colour in everyone’s wardrobe (haven’t you heard? yellow’s the new pink) so scoop one up!
