Bean Shopping
Protein is good for you. It helps you grow and build muscles. One food you can find it in is edamame—baby soybeans, picked off the twig before they ripen, boiled and served with a sprinkle of sea salt.
Edamame (pronounced eda-mommy) is also the name of a bouncing baby store in Marda Loop featuring eco-inspired fashions and accessories for moms and growing babies.
Edamame Kids is the first-born business to entrepreneur and mom Amanda Barker. Many of the lines available in the shop are unique to Calgary, including functional (and flattering) Canadian-made Momzelle nursing tops (featured on CBC’s Dragon’s Den) and many are made from organic fabrics, such as the pretty loungewear from Majamas.
Babies and toddlers (up to age two) get their fair share of swag as well, with clothing from cute-as-a-button Speesees (we love the Kimono dress) and Jannuzzi (simple T’s, many emblazoned with earth-friendly messages) to name a couple.
You won’t find organic bibs, splash mats and lined bags from Mimi the Sardine anywhere else in Calgary. And for the table, Edamame Kids carries glass bottles from Green to Grow.
We loved the innovative diaper bags from Danzo Baby. These easy-to-organize bags come with built-in, clear-plastic pockets easily labelled with the provided Velcro tabs (diapers, wipes, Daddy). Stylish bags from Babymel (from the UK) and Natural Charm (Canadian company) grace store shelves as well.
Finally, look for Calgary-designed and Canadian-made breastfeeding support. The Baby Buddy Nursing Pillow is larger than most nursing pillows, and comes with removable covers in a range of organic cotton and flannel fabrics.
The June 26 grand-opening reception next Saturday is on between 1–5 pm with face-painting and balloon-animal fun. Arrive early if you want refreshments, door prizes and gifts for the first 50 visitors (party starts at 1 pm).
Now that’s what we call a good, healthy start.
