Make the Day
Life might not be a picnic, but on Mother’s Day it’s the word du jour. We like picnics because they are kid (and dad) do-able—allowing mom to be the guest of honour in her own house, backyard or park alongside her A-list attendees.
Let your children select the picnic headquarters (you are the guest after all) and expect to spread out at any one of Calgary’s top playgrounds, such as the Stampede-inspired play area at Prince’s Island Park. Upscale the picnic fare with the perfect picnic sandwich with fixings from Blush Lane Organic Market. If weather is an issue (and you won’t know until the morning of), spread a blanket in the backyard, or on the living room floor. Encourage kids to invite their stuffed animal friends to the party—they will love it.
Since mom needs to avoid meal prep and clean up all day long, spend the downtime giving feminine fingers (and toes) the princess treatment with a visit from a mobile spa, or go for the works with a mobile massage. Even better, invite your mom over to join in the home spa experience.
Homespun manicures and massages work just as well, particularly if combined with a delicious cup of coffee and some chocolate, perhaps, from Choklat.
Have we mentioned sleeping in yet? That’s because an early morning free of interruption should be a given on Mother’s Day. Presents, on the other hand, are purely optional. Kid-made gifts like stepping stones or hand-painted pottery are functional keepsakes that moms adore.
Sounds sentimental, but it’s true—all Mom really wants for Mother’s Day is a little quiet time to herself and a little quiet time with her family. No fancy brunch required.
