Spring Break is here. Excited? There’s a bit of a love-hate sentiment in the air, apparently. We embrace the chance to let go of routine but for those with work commitments or bored kids, more than a week without structure leaves a space that screams to be filled (oh, and remember Easter is tacked on to the end of the break this year).

Fortunately, Spring Break camps abound for preschool to elementary school-aged kids. The City of Calgary offers a variety of all-purpose activity camps located at leisure and art centres and many still have spots available. But, if you’re looking for something with a little novelty-power, check out these gems located just off the beaten track.

Arts
Calgary Young People’s Theatre presents your kids in their own production. Kids spend a week learning basic percussion on West African drums overlaid by an original script and performed on the final day. Full-day (ages 6–12) and half-day camps (ages 4–6) are available.

U B the Artist offers one-day camps for kids interested in learning how to paint pottery or fuse glass. Classes take place in their McKenzie Towne studio and children return home with a masterpiece in hand.

Science
Astronomy Calgary and the Telus World of Science present the sun, the moon and the stars to children aged 3 to 11 on Tuesday, April 6. Kids can participate in education-based fun such as Hike Through the Sky (half-day for preschoolers) and 3, 2, 1…Blast Off! (full-day for ages 9–11). Telus World of Science hosts other science-based camps daily on topics such as construction, world culture and biology.

Sports
Golf in March in Calgary? Who knew? The RCGA Golf Centre gets your kids clubbing and swinging at their training headquarters located just off Glenmore and Deerfoot Trails. Lesson packages run for one week and start at age four.

Calgary STARS Gymnastics and Cheerleading Centre is hosting camps at their Currie Barracks facility with gymnastics, crafts and games for children four and up. Camps run half and full days.

Look to the University of Calgary Outdoor Centre for more traditional winter activities for kids in grades two to six, including snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snow-shelter building.

Avoiding Spring Break(down) will put the spring back in your step while your kids are busy, entertained and happy.
