Dish It
It’s about time. That’s what we have to say about the launch of dish Kids, a new series of cooking classes for kids aged 6 – 12, launching next week at dish cooking studio, one of our favourite food hot spots in town.
Dish cooking studio is well known for catering parties, hosting parties and teaching the rest of us how to do both through its adult cooking classes and private functions. Now they are letting the kids in on the action with dish Kids, a new cooking school offering scheduled classes, birthday parties and private field trips.
The goal at dish Kids is to teach children love and respect for food while building confidence and independence through fun cooking activities. The process is the fundamental lesson at dish Kids, not the end result, as kids are encouraged to have as much fun as they can without the pressure of creating a culinary masterpiece (something we moms know all about).
Classes run for nine weeks each Wednesday starting January 14, from 4:00 – 5:30 pm and parents are not encouraged to stay (no matter how bad your own cooking skills are). The classes, taught by dish executive chefs who have had a lot of experience teaching and working with children, are themed and educational. The Italian class will teach children how to work with dough and how to make pasta, a Japanese class will teach children how to create savoury and sweet sushi creations and the healthy eating class has salads, vegetables and dressings on the curriculum. Jack and Jill might even make it home with dinner for everyone one night after preparing a Thai beef and noodles meal, who knows?
So if you’re looking for a bit of alone time in your kitchen this winter, send your kids to the dish kitchen for a few hours. It sounds dishy, doesn’t it?
Good to Know:
- It’s encouraged, but not mandatory, to sign up for all nine classes at once
- There will be a parent and tot class offered for children 3–5 years in April
- Aprons are provided
- dish Kids is an eco-friendly cooking school
