Better than Band Camp

Summer Camp Ideas

Our little Einsteins are all growing up so fast. After a tiring year of sorting, patterning and finger painting, it’s time to learn some real-life skills. And while summer camp choices abound, we’ve discovered some truly great alternative options that suit both the outdoor and the indoor type.

Your outdoor adventurer will love Ecomarine Marine Ocean Kayak Centre’s Kids Camp. The staff have been Vancouver’s ocean kayak specialists for over 29 years and they know how to get your kids enthused. Ecomarine offers a week-long introductory camp where kids will learn all about safety fundamentals, basic strokes, and navigation under the watchful eyes of the instructors, all in a playful setting. Kayaking games are the order of the half-day session, or combine it with sailing at MacSailing (also check out their Wet Feet summer sessions for 5–6 year-olds) or windsurfing at Windsure to make a full-day camp.

For a great indoor option, try Carousel Theatre’s Summer Camp Imagination Station. Even the tiniest budding thespian is given the chance to shine there and experience the magic of the theatre. This camp runs in two sessions (3–4 and 5–6 year-olds), and the programs are ambitious. In July, your little prince or princess will explore Fairytales and Myths; in August they’ll take on Shakespeare and Robert Munsch. At $150 (+ HST) per two-week session, the whole world is a stage for a song. Spots are going fast, so register now and watch—voilà—a star is born!

So whether it’s toddler theatrics or pint-sized paddling, introduce them to something new this summer. It’s amazing what you will both learn.
