Cake Walk
No birthday party is complete without cake, and homemade cake always tops the list. But if baking and decorating is not your thing, that doesn’t mean it has to be made at your home.
We’ve got the scoop (or should we say slice) on some yummy, new, local home-based bakeries.
North Vancouver mom entrepreneur Tammy Morrey’s company, Kake, specializes in delicious home-baked cakes, cupcakes and cookies. Tammy (aka the Kake Lady) uses all natural ingredients (no additives or preservatives) and her recipes are all nut-free. She also makes delicious gluten-free items and smaller cakes upon request. We love that her three-layer cakes are generous in size (and freeze beautifully). Your birthday cake can be delivered right to your door upon two days’ notice, complete with a returnable glass cake plate, candles, and matches. She also has cookie-filled loot bags in the same theme as your cake. Delivery is free on the North Shore, and for a small fee, the Kake Lady delivers her magic beyond too.
On Vancouver’s west side, Jacqueline Long, mom to 22-month old twins, cooked up The i Bakery (as in ‘I made it’) this past fall. Jacqueline specializes in home-baked goods for all occasions, and she loves to make unique custom items, such as a sushi cake or Olympic cookies to match your party’s theme. Jacqueline requires a minimum of one-day notice to make your masterpiece. Then, you can pick up your order from her home or have it delivered for a small fee.
In Burnaby, Cake Pans Galore (the brainchild of sister/mom duo Sara and Rachel Perizzolo), offers something for everyone. Choose from a basic three-day cake pan rental to make your own teddy bear or tractor cake; or a complete decorating kit and cake pan rental; even a custom party package with themed decorating essentials and a licensed character cake pan rental (such as Thomas the Train). They also offer cake-making courses to help you get started. If you just want them to make your special cake, they’ll do that, too. Delivery for cakes or pan rentals is not available just yet, but Cake Pans Galore has two pick-up locations.
As a bonus, these mommas all use the simple, wholesome ingredients Grandma used: butter, eggs, flour, cocoa, and cream.
So, go ahead and let them eat cake!
