Brunch Spots

Long, languorous Saturday mornings in bed? Clubbing with the girlfriends Friday night?

Yep, all a thing of the past.

But there’s one decadent weekend tradition that moms can still enjoy, toddlers notwithstanding. Brunch, anyone?

It’s the meal with something for everyone, whether you’re an Eggs Benny fan or rush straight for prime rib. And brunch is generally less stressful for parents, because it doesn’t come with the pressure of a formal, best-behaviour ‘dinner-out’. So here are some of our savvy picks for child-friendly brunch spots around town—chosen not just for the eats, but for the potential after-brunch outings in the surrounding neighbourhood.

The Boathouse Restaurants
A Vancouver family is the Boathouse Restaurants, which have six waterfront locations around the Lower Mainland. Their brunch menu has a $6.99 kids combo, and adults can munch on a variety of bennies, scrambles and omelettes. Given their waterfront real estate, most locations lend themselves well to a calorie-burning walk after the meal, from White Rock’s seaside promenade to the beachfront stroll in English Bay. Check online for locations, and to make reservations.

Northlands Golf Course
If you decide to head for the hills instead of to the water, remember Northlands Golf Course, tucked just off the road leading up Mount Seymour. Called one of the best weekend buffets on the North Shore—and great value—this Sunday treat runs from 10 to 2 and offers a lovely view over the golf course, stream, and surrounding forest. Cost is $16.50 for adults; those four and up pay $1/year.

Close-by natural attractions include hiking trails and sledding slopes on Mount Seymour, depending on the season, and birdwatching at Maplewood Mudflats.

Combining two meals into one brunch gives you a break from the kitchen not just once, but twice in one day—very savvy indeed. Now if we could just figure out a way to sleep in.
