Hit the Town (Centre)

Lynn Valley Town Centre

If it takes a village to raise a child, we moms are about to get another pair of helping hands.

This weekend marks the grand opening of Lynn Valley Town Centre in North Vancouver, a new town centre that’s a good family destination even for those who live “off the Shore.”

Why do we love it? Let us count the ways:

  1. The library, which anchors the brand-new district-owned development, has a children’s department with lots of beckoning reading areas and glass walls that take in the streetscape and mountain view.
  2. Shops surround a huge, sunny village square where your children can safely play while you chill with a latte from Delaney’s, one of Vancouver’s favourite locally owned coffeehouses.
  3. The village square is hosting a free summer concert series, starting on July 11—look forward to six folksy and funky Friday nights.
    1. Parking is free and plentiful, as are the major bus stops.
    2. You may be surrounded by new shops, but you’re still less than a mile away from awe-inspiring (and free!) adventure at Lynn Canyon Park, where you can traverse a gorge via suspension bridge, hike for miles through the rainforest, cool off in a swimming hole, or have some eco-fun in the child-friendly ecology centre.

On Saturday, the village is hosting its ‘housewarming’, so there’s no better time to visit. Musical entertainment runs the gamut from a 1 pm concert by the Lynn Valley Black Bear Band to a 2:45 pm musical stomp with J Knutson and the Draycott Swamp Devils, with guest musicians John Mann and Rob Menzies of Spirit of the West. In between times you’ll hear Celtic music, see a dance performance in honour of BC’s 150th birthday, and enjoy family activities such as a fashion show, face-painting, and a balloon-twisting clown who will keep the youngsters happy (all weather permitting!)

Ready to hang at a new ‘hood for the day? Lynn Valley Town Centre is open for play.
