Snow Close to Home

Mountain Family Fun in Vancouver

Looking forward to weekends with your beloved and the kids ...at home…? (We hope you have a plan.)

Here’s an idea, head for the hills—or the mountains, that is. Look to the big three glorious North Shore Mountains, (so close by) for inspiration and a host of activities.

Mount Seymour is the least expensive option if you are looking to ski. Children five and under ski free and a family pass is $119 for the day. For non skiers, there are tubing, tobogganing and snowshoeing on offer. If you are interested in the tobogganing, bring your own magic carpet (no rentals or inflatables allowed). A family pass is $32, and you can be really prepared by going to the website to help you plan your first trip to the mountain, no matter what age you are (or your kids).

Grouse Mountain offers the most non-ski activities. Their Peak of Christmas event, (which runs until December 24) includes breakfast with Santa, visits to Santa’s workshops, interpretive sessions with reindeer, outdoor ice skating, sleigh rides, and classic Christmas movies. After Christmas, Grouse still offers a host of activities, including ice skating, sleigh rides, snowshoeing, Sno-Limo rides and Theatre in the Sky. And all of these activities are included in the General admission ($35 for adults, $12.95 for kids). This is a great place for skiing and snowboarding, too. Children aged 5 – 12 cost $22 for an all day ticket, kids 4 and under are free and a family pass (for four) is $150.

Cypress Mountain is known as the ski and ride mountain on the North Shore, but they also offer a variety of non-ski activities, including tubing and sliding. Their most reputable non-ski activity is snowshoeing, due to their great proximity to Hollyburn Mountain. They offer adults and family snowshoe programs to the historic Hollyburn Lodge for an afternoon hot drink, an early evening of wine and appetizers, or even for fondue dinners (book these early). Children aged 6 – 12 are $29.52, those five and under are $9.52 and adults are $60.

So stop looking at the view and be part of it. You can save the fire until après your outdoor activities this holiday season.

And let there be snow!
