Gimme Your Digits

Cell Phone

The playdate was scheduled to end at three. By half-past you idly wonder if the mom is caught in traffic. At four o’clock you call the home number she left when she dropped little Jack off at your place, but no one’s answering. By four-thirty you begin to worry that she’s fled the country. This is a serious case of “I wish I had her cell phone number-itis”.

Until now, finding a mom’s cell phone number involved calling all the other moms in your phone book to see who might have her digits. Wasn’t fun, was it? That’s what Marla Kravice thought too. As her three children got busier and more independent, she often worried about how their ever expanding network of friends’ parents, caregivers and instructors would be able to find her in an emergency.

Like most mom entrepreneurs, Marla took matters into her own hands and created Firefly Locator, the first cell phone directory in Canada. Lucky for us, she created it specifically for moms! Launching this week, Firefly will collect the cell phone numbers of the moms who sign up for the service. Then, anyone who needs to find you in an emergency will be able to log on to the site or call the toll free number to find out how to contact you on your cell.

Marla calls it a “cellular insurance policy”, but we call it a savvy way to feel a little less stressed about being reachable when your kids need you.

Good to know: Firefly promises never to sell your number to anyone. The company makes make money by charging $5 annually to any mom who wants her number listed. Right now (for the next 30 days) you can sign up and get your first year free.
