Just because we buy the same clothes, coffee, furniture and books as the rest of the western world doesn’t mean our kids are destined for the same sameness. Does it? If you’re worried the teacher won’t be able to distinguish your child from the other Jacks and Jills, we have a new place for you to shop.
There isn’t even a shiny permanent sign outside yet, but already the stuff is flying out the door of SCKC, the latest kids’ clothing store on Yonge Street. And we’re not surprised. It’s not just a store, it’s a brand new line of clothing for kids and it’s adorable, practical and affordable.
The mom and daughter team of Lauren (the daughter) and Rose (her mom) were inspired to find clothes that look good but can play hard, too. Rose was tired of the fancy ‘from Grandma’ clothes she was buying for her grandchildren and Lauren couldn’t find decent clothes for her son, Jake (age 2). So they put their heads together and developed SCKC for children from newborn to age 10.
All 52 styles are brand new and designed from scratch—which means even the fabric designs and patterns are created by SCKC. What’s cool about that is each and every piece you buy at SCKC is interchangeable, matching other items in the line. So your kids can choose what to wear in the morning and mom doesn’t have to worry if it matches, because it all does. Even patterns and stripes and checks—they are all made to coordinate.
Since we know how tough it is to find cool boy clothes, we were impressed with the cotton twill pants called ‘croppers’ ($39.95) that sport a trendy plaid cuff at the bottom but also have very practical, adjustable waistbands inside. For more serious playtime, the cozy cotton jersey shorts ($25.99) were another fave, and they go well with all the cool T-shirts. For the girls, we couldn’t help but notice that the theme was sporty but feminine with lots of pretty colours. If the pink and white jacket ($49.99) came in our size, we would have bought one in a flash. The leggings ($14.99) with details at the bottom (there’s lovely ruching) are just perfect for the stylish girl who likes to play hard in the playground, too.
And that’s what we call a perfect match.
