The Family Day Way

Family Day 2009
Two boys enjoying hot chocolate

That long weekend in February may have thrown you for a loop last year, but not again. No work and no school—great. But do you have anything planned yet? Here are some Family Day activities tailor-made for our favourite kinds of families:

Urban Explorer Family
Your family loves the outdoors, as long as it’s broken up with regular bathroom breaks and hot beverage refueling. Try the Family Festival Day in the Beach. All along Queen Street East (near Kew Gardens) you’ll find family-friendly activities including a petting zoo, magic show, reptile show, story telling, skating and crafts. Good to know: Many of the local businesses are in on the action, so there will be lots of chances to head indoors to thaw out and get the little one’s face painted. Starbucks will be doling out free kid’s hot chocolate and kids eat for free with an adult purchase of $10 at Licks!

Princess Family
If pink is your family’s favourite colour, we know something your little princess will truly love. Take your magic carriage down to the Bata Shoe Museum to discover Cinderella Days. Girly girls will enjoy special arts and crafts, trying on costumes and hearing Cinderella stories from around the world. Good to know: Special story telling only happens from 1:30 to 2:30 pm and arts and crafts run from 12:00 – 4:00 pm.

Gameshow Family
If you often compete to see who can get dressed for bed the fastest and you own more than twenty board games, you might enjoy the festivities at Casa Loma. The Chatterbox Family Day Celebration will host special themed stations set up around Toronto’s favourite castle to inspire families to learn communication and teamwork while competing for some nifty prizes. (Family weekend for four at the Delta Chelsea Hotel, anyone?) Good to know: The Family Day activities are included in the cost of admission. Tickets can be purchased and printed in advance.

Bargain Hunting Family
If you’re looking for a deal on Family Day, you’ll want to know that the City of Toronto is making many of its facilities available for Family Day for free. Feel like taking the kids for a swim? Call (416) 338-POOL for free swim times. More of a skating fan? Call (416) 338-RINK for a free skate schedule.

Remember, it’s not just a day off work. Family Day is mandatory family fun time. So whatever you do, celebrate together!

We wish you lots of hugs and kisses on ‘Love Day’ and a very fun and happy Family Day this weekend, from the team at SavvyMom.
