The leaves are turning. It happens every year so you might as well get over it because you’ve likely got bigger issues this month. We’ve put together a guide to help you and your family transition into ‘Back to Reality’ season.
GET
A new family calendar. Mom Agenda has a very handy wall calendar we love and if you like to have your very own book to write in, they have a great choice for that too.
Why? Because you’ll feel more organized (it’s like starting the school year with new pencils and binders). Available at chloeinstyle.com
DO
Bring your potted plants inside from the garden or deck.
Why? One bad night of frost can kill them and they will look lovely inside. (Just remember to check them for insects first and treat appropriately. Those insects aren’t usually house trained!)
GO
To the Diaper Disco on Saturday, September 27 at Johnny B Club and Restaurant in Whitby.
Why? Because it’s a hip nightclub converted into a daytime disco for the under-12 crowd and their cool parents. Even better, the event benefits the Valentine Neonatal Care Unit (NICU) at Mount Sinai Hospital. For more info, visit: www.toronto4kids.com/events (GO brought to you by Toronto4Kids.com)
PLAY
A fun game with your kids—it’s called Honey, Do You Love Me?
Why? It is guaranteed to make them (and you) laugh. (And what’s better than that?) Here’s how. Players form a circle with one player in the middle (it). “It” must approach players in the circle and ask, “Honey, do you love me?”. The person being questioned must answer, “Honey, I love you but I just can’t smile.” If s/he does smile or laugh, s/he becomes “it” and the previous “it” takes their place in the circle. “It” is not allowed to touch other players but may make as many funny faces as s/he wishes.
READ
Am I a Normal Parent? by Sara Dimerman.
Why? It might not change your world, but it will likely reassure you and hopefully allow you to stop judging yourself (never mind Suzie Q next door). And if you like to read, check out our new book giveaway courtesy of Simon & Schuster. Every month for the next year we’ll be giving away five of their newest books for moms and children to one lucky SavvyMom.
SURF
www.howtogetridofstuff.com
Why? Because it’s addictive, entertaining and most of all very useful for moms like us. It hasn’t been stumped yet by our queries (think lice, ketchup stains, chapped lips, fruit flies, bad neighbours).
GREEN
Your lawn now.
Why? September is actually the best time for lawn care. Fertilization, weed control, establishment of new lawns, and overseeding should be done over the next few weeks. Find a good eco-friendly slow release fertilizer and stop making excuses.
HELP
Buy tickets for the whole family to enjoy A Morning with the Stars at the Danforth Music Hall on Saturday, September 20.
Why? Funds raised will go to SickKids Foundation and there will be fabulous entertainment for the entire family!
