Don’t let the lousy weather drive you indoors to an overcrowded gym where it’s hard to stay motivated. We’re sharing our favorite options to help keep your fun and fitness resolutions alive longer for 2012.
Snowshoeing at Grouse Mountain
If you can walk, you can snowshoe—ergo, you can do the Snowshoe Grind, a 5K trek up through a winter wonderland. It’s called the Grind for a reason, and should take about an hour, but just imagine the fun of running back down through the snowy drifts. Snowshoes are available for rent at the Fireside Hut.
Cross-Country Skiing at Cypress Mountain
It’s been said that if classic Nordic skiing is akin to classical music, then skate-skiing is rock and roll. In either case, the energy expended to push those long skinny planks along hard packed snow sets records for caloric burn. Cypress’ Nordic area is open from 9 am to 10 pm daily, no reservations (or resolutions) needed.
Hot Yoga
If you didn’t get a trip to Maui in your stocking this year, try a Hot Yoga class. With classroom temps around 105 degrees, you can pretend you’re doing the Shivasana pose on Wailea Beach. YYoga has seven locations running up to 16 (hot and otherwise) classes daily, eliminating the ‘I can’t find a class to fit my schedule’ excuse.
Floorball
Just because you’re a hockey mom, doesn’t mean you should sit on the bench. Floorball, a form of indoor hockey that is huge in Europe (the Sedins are fans) has come to Canada. It’s safe and there’s no equipment needed. Newcomers are welcome to give floorball a try on Monday nights at the Roundhouse Community Centre, from 6 to 7:45 pm.
Dancing
So you don’t think you can dance? The experienced instructors at the Urban Beat Dance Co. want you to think again. From salsa to hip hop, come get your groove on and get a workout at the same time. All levels of dancers are welcome, with or without a partner. If it worked for Ricki Lake, it can work wonders for us too.
So put the fun back in fitness and hang onto your resolutions awhile longer. Your body will thank you. Tested by Nancy C., Vancouver
