A Flair for Kids’ Wares

Toad in a Tree & Cici Art Factory
Pretty pillows and artsy hats delight little heads of various ages!

Unique gifts kids will love are often tough to find, but harness the creative talents of local mom entrepreneurs and the results are fun fashions and furnishings full of flare.

Hats Off
Kim Seely and Amanda Feltham had been making their own creations from their homes in Campbell River and selling them on Etsy for a couple of years when they decided to combine their talents and create Toad in a Tree. Toad in a Tree is best known for its innovative and stylish hats that are designed to grow with a child from baby through to young adult. The adjustment toggle allows the hat to form to the child’s head so that fit is always perfect (with no bulging or buckling).

The hats are made from recycled fabrics with a range of hand-felted patches that appeal to all ages and genders (from monsters and bikes to owls and flowers). The line has now expanded to include jackets, skirts, diaper bags and hoodies. Their hats are currently sold in Vancouver through Pebble, at a variety of stores on the Island and through Etsy.

Pillow TalkRobot Pillow
Liz Clay isn’t new to the mom entrepreneur world. We have long been admirers of her wall art for kids, and now we’re loving her new art form, cushions. Locally made, the soft, sateen, organic cotton pillow covers have her original artwork digitally applied to them, resulting in vivid colours with lots of depth. The pillows are filled with plush down, and for ease of care, the covers just slip off for a cold water wash.

The designs feature robots and butterflies. The robots are passionate creatures, each with their unique love of a sport, food or music, and each with quirky details that make kids of all ages laugh. The butterflies are designed to be anatomically correct, and she has added brilliant colours to make them unique. Each pillow series has the same background hue, making it easy to collect a few to display together as well. These pillows are great for toddlers through to young adults and are available on her website

So hats off to local mom entrepreneurs who have a creative gift that keeps on giving. Tested by Michelle T., Vancouver
