A Good Fit

Outdoor Fitness Fun
Fresh Air Fitness Fun!

It’s easy to get blue when autumn turns grey. And double especially when our favourite jeans are a bit too tight, thanks to summertime’s ice cream and other treats.

So snap to, girlfriend. We’ve got the ultimate blues-buster for you today—a program called Fresh Air Fitness. It’s the creation of Jennifer Hewlett, a mom who always preferred trail trekking over coffee klatches when her own kids were in school. When other mothers started to join her, Jennifer (a UBC physical education grad) found her calling.

Today, Fresh Air Fitness offers women of all ages and abilities the opportunity to get out and experience an ever-changing variety of North Shore settings in the company of people who quickly become friends. You might decide Jennifer’s Monday morning hiking group is to your taste, or you might want to join the Friday trail runners. Perhaps you like the variety of her Wednesday program, which has participants working on body balls at the waterfront one term, snowshoeing the next, and kayaking in the spring. Can’t choose? Don’t worry, there’s an ‘all-for-one’ price for ladies who want to do any of the programs, any time.

Why do we like Fresh Air Fitness? Because it’s not just about getting in shape—although you will. It’s about being good to body, mind and spirit, and to that end, all participants are invited to special events that range from wine-and-cheese parties to book club meetings. Seasons are celebrated (snowshoe fondue, anyone?) and good food is honoured with events such as the Edible B.C. market tour of Commercial Drive. Jennifer even organizes out-of-towners such as Whistler retreats, Tofino surfing trips and half-marathons in the States.

It’s not easy for moms to make time for themselves, but it’s important. So, Fresh Air Fitness offers a Saturday class, when it might be easier to arrange any necessary babysitting, and Jennifer is also looking at scheduling new programs on Tuesdays and Thursdays with a later start time to accommodate participants who come from further reaches of Vancouver.

Magazine covers often promise the secret to ‘dropping a dress size’ by Christmas, but we all know the ‘secret’ is really just to drop the magazine and get moving. Our mothers had it right all along, of course—fresh air is good for you.
