Beat the Heat with Frozen Treats

Frozen Treats
Where will you be screaming for ice cream this summer? Here are our picks. Find out more

Ice cream is a summertime tradition so we thought it was time to add a few new hot spots (or shall we say refreshing cold spots?) to our original and very tasty scoop selection. We’re pretty sure the kids won’t be the only ones screaming for ice cream after tasting these frozen finds.

Yummy Yogurt
Pinkberry, a West Hollywood phenomenon since 2005, is finally coming to Canada, opening its first location in Park Royal tonight (July 21) with free yogurt from 5 to 9 pm. Frozen treats are available in original, pomegranate, chocolate, coconut, green tea, mango, the summer’s fave flavour, watermelon. All their yogurts are made with non-fat milk and loaded with probiotics. Add one or two toppings (try healthy fresh fruit or nuts or for some sugary fun, organic gummy bears) to personalize. If you’re looking for something around mealtime, try a fruit salad, parfait or smoothie. As a bonus, the website lists the nutritional content for all flavours, sizes, and even the cone. With more Lower Mainland locations coming, Pinkberry is soon to be a household name in Vancouver.

Gustoso Gelato
Afternoons at the beach and evening strolls along the pier are all made better with a gelato in-hand. Located in White Rock’s hip and trendy West Beach area, Dolce Gelato (15045 Marine Drive) uses fresh, natural ingredients to produce 24 tasty flavours of sorbet and gelato. The shop’s Milanese owners have been making their own gelato here since 2001. Open at 12 pm daily, this cash-only ice cream shop is just one more reason for a family outing to this beautiful city-by-the sea.

Indispensible Ice Cream
Sometimes there is nothing better than the creamy taste of old-fashioned ice cream, so when the urge hits, head to Bendick’s Ice Cream Factory (8262 Manitoba Street) where they have been making their Sara’s premium ice cream on-site since 1984. With two-litre, take-home containers available for $8.50, it’s excellent value. Looking for a frozen treat for your next birthday party? Try one of the ice cream cakes or bring home a large-sized container.
Good to Know: Bring cash. Bendick’s small storefront doesn’t accept plastic.

So while you’re catching some rays on those long summer days, be sure to scoop up some frozen treats to beat the heat. Tested by Michelle T., Vancouver
