Bootcamp Basics

Fitness Bootcamps for Women
Moms working out with children watching from strollers

For moms, ‘bikini season’ is second to ‘make sure you can keep up with your kids season’ (whether you wear a bikini or not). We need to stay close when they are surrounded by water, riding bikes or scooters (or anything with wheels) and more. But how to stay in shape so you can keep up? One solution is to find a bootcamp near you.

No drill sergeants allowed. We’ve found some local bootcamps catering to women and moms, giving you the freedom to exercise at your pace (with or without baby).

Fit 4 Two, started by local mom entrepreneur Melanie Osmack, has been offering Stroller Fitness and Stroller Bootcamp for a number of years now, allowing moms with newborns to get fit outdoors in a supportive environment. Melanie’s energy and enthusiasm is amazing and she changes up the exercises quickly so that neither mom nor baby has time to get bored.

If your child is past the stroller fitness stage of life, some Fit 4 Two locations have started to offer Babyfree Bootcamp this spring. As with the Stroller classes, the pace of this outdoor core strength-building class is quick. The fitness level within the group can vary and everyone adjusts the exercises to their own ability. Check the website to see if there is a class near you.

Another women-only fitness program, which is new to BC, is Booty Camp Fitness, with 12 locations throughout the Lower Mainland and Victoria. This program projects a more traditional image of bootcamp, but the environment is still non-threatening. They focus more on personal fitness goal-setting, and include nutritional planning, and regular fitness assessments—so they take things a bit more seriously.

Don’t sign only the kids up for camp this year. Booty calls!
