Feel Good Summer Fun

Unique Summer Children’s Charity Fundraisers
Feel Good Summer Fun

For most of us, summer is about getting outdoors and creating great family memories. But not every Lower Mainland family is lucky enough to share the same opportunities, which is why we’ve found some creative children’s charity fundraising programs that help you spread some of your good fortune while still enjoying all that summer has to offer.

Grind for Kids
This brand new fundraiser in support of BC Children’s Hospital is running until September 15 and is great for active families with children seven years of age and older. Grind for Kids is simple: you organize your family hiking excursion up the Grind as per usual, register online or at the mountain ($20 registration fee), and then get your friends and family to pledge your excursion ($1 or more/hike).

The Grind is probably a two-hour hike with kids, and at the top there are a myriad of family activities available.  Head down the gondola for a cost of $10/person or buy an annual family pass for $189.95 before July 18 ($199 thereafter).

Kids of Vancouver
In its second year, this great fundraising effort is a great way to cross ‘family portrait’ off your list in support of Kids Picks (Greater Vancouver Food Bank) and Tiny Bundles (SHARE Food Bank). Tanya Harrison, owner of Veridamo Photography and founder of Kids of Vancouver, sells her photography services to families for a $100 donation to one of these charities (done through her office). With that donation, you receive a complimentary portrait session of your child (additional children are only $25/child), and a photo of your child will appear in the Kids of Vancouver 2010 coffee-table book (available in early December for $95).

To get involved, nominate your child on the site, meet with Tanya to discuss your child’s likes and preferences, and then agree on a time, date, location, and what to bring along. Finally, review the proofs and purchase your faves (no obligation) as wall art, portraits or gift albums. Your summer memories are now captured and Christmas gifts are covered as well.

So grind or snap your way to a memorable family summer and feel good knowing you are helping other families, too.

Good to Know: Donations to both causes are tax deductible.
